This article documents the impact of the Brazilian railway network on technology adoption between the middle nineteenth and twentieth century. I exploit variation induced by geographic location, where municipalities near the least-cost routes were more likely to be connected to the railway system, to identify the effects of railroads on mechanized cotton spinning capacity. I show that the expansion of railways increased the adoption of new technologies in the textile industry. The railroads, built to export coffee, connected the national industry to the modern overseas machinery market, increasing the import of new technologies. In the medium term, this technological catch-up resulted in the shift of workers from the agricultural sector to the industrial sector. Municipalities initially connected to the railroad have higher per capita income today, despite the closure of many railway stations. Overall, the results show the importance of domestic trade costs to partly explain the slow diffusion of new technologies and industrialization to the peripheral countries between the XIX and XX centuries.

This paper provides evidence that exposure to shocks that trigger population outflows leads to early marriage by young women, putting them on a poor-life development path. Exploiting a novel dataset and the plausibly exogenous occurrence of earthquakes within Indonesian provinces, I show that an earthquake raises the annual hazard of women marrying before the age of 18 by 44%, compared to non-exposed young women. The overall effect of earthquakes on women’s age at marriage masks substantial heterogeneity. The effects are larger for earthquake-induced migrant versus left-behind women. By obtaining informal insurance from marriage, induced migrants marry earlier as a financial coping strategy: a marriage payment, an increase in labour return when the husband joins the household, and social integration in receiving communities. This is not the case for left-behind women. I find evidence that a supply shock drives this result. Large population outflows and school building destruction that leads to a drop in schooling explain the results for left-behind women.

Many college admissions systems use a combination of GPA and standardized test scores to determine access to more selective programs. In this paper, I study the impacts of a 2013 reform in the Chilean admission system that sought to increase equity by introducing a third component, based on a student’s GPA relative to the historical average at their high school. Simulating the admission mechanism with and without the relative GPA boost, I classify applicants into three groups: (i) those who gained access to more selective programs (pulled-up), (ii) those who lost access to more selective programs (pushed-down), and (iii) those whose admission was unaffected. Applying the same procedure in earlier years, I identify the same groups, facilitating a difference-in-differences design to estimate the impacts of the 2013 reform on enrollment, persistence, and graduation. Pulled-up students were able to persist in their newly accessed programs, resulting in more selective degree attainment with no effect on overall BA completion. Pushed-down students, who tended to come from better-educated/higher-income families, experienced comparable-sized reductions in the probability of graduating from selective programs, offset by gains in graduation from less selective programs. I conclude that the reform improved equity with little or no loss in efficiency.
