Abstract

El presente documento investiga la hipótesis de que existan características especiales que diferencian las personas de familias pobres de los de familias no pobres y que pueden tener influencia en la determinación de los ingresos de las personas. En especial se investigan dos aspectos del problema: (1) la existencia de características no observables (de tipo personal, social, innatas o adquiridas) que afectan los ingresos de los pobres y (2) la posibilidad de que el mercado "trate" de manera diferente los indicadores de productividad de miembros de familias pobres y no pobres. El estudio usó información de las Encuestas de Hogares del DANE para el sector urbano y rural. La conclusión tentativa a la que se llega es que posiblemente las características personales no observables en las encuestas hacen que la evaluación de la productividad potencia de los pobres sea más difícil de hacer y esté sujeta a mayores errores que las de los no pobres. Esto da origen a una situación parecida a la descrita por los modelos de discriminación estadística. Más investigación es necesaria para profundizar en estas hipótesis.
