Earnings effects of household investment in health in Colombia
Abstract

This study considers the links between health indicators and individual labor productivity in Colombia. An earnings equation including health as a form of human capital additional to schooling is estimated. The morbidity variable has negative sign when the model is estimated by instrumental variables [IV]. Controlling for socio-demographic characteristics, an increase of 50% in the average number of days individuals were ill and unable to attend work in the last month would imply reductions in labor earnings between seven percent and 13%. The height coefficient, positive without the IV correction, increased largely with IV methods. Being one centimeter taller would increase earnings between 4.7% and 12%.
